Valentine's Day is quickly approaching and I know people are looking for ideas of their kids' classmates. Well, I came across this tutorial on the Lily Bee blog and I just had to share it here.

Mini Butterfly Valentines

Hey everyone, Cindy here with you today to share a how-to make cute little butterflies that dress up mini lollipops for your child's classmates. Several months ago, my little girl & I spent some time on Pinterest (I know, I can't get enough of that place) & we found these cute Butterfly Valentine project. Later that day, she created a few of her own. So of course, I got to thinking about her Valentine treats & decided to make a smaller version.

Punch a large 3/16" hole at bottom of die-cut hearts.

Match holes together while creating a butterfly form & adhere together.

Once dry, carefully slip mini lollipop through dual hearts.

Use tiny glue dots to adhere stick to butterfly, pressing firmly.

Use glue dots to adhere banner names in front & adorn with small googly eyes.

Here I punched out smaller hearts with a "Love Corinne" note on the back of them.

Pretty simple! You could even dress them up with twine or gems for fun or even buttons. But since these will be going to a bunch of 4 & 5 year olds, I though it would be best to keep it simple for their little hands. The best part is that I started these super early instead of waiting until the night before.

I think there are now dies out on the market to cut out pretty much everything your heart desires! That is awesome news for some of us but there are others who still want to do it themselves or don't want the expense or storage woes of massive amounts of dies.

Check out this tutorial from Jenny Peterson to learn how to make gorgeous rolled flowers all by yourself....

Stamp: Cheryl Alger's Sugar and Spice from Kraftin' Kimmie Stamps

Supplies (plus your adhesive of choice..I still have no idea what works best, so don't ask;) See that wierd little screwdrivy-looking-pokey thing? It's a quilling tool (you can buy them at most crafting joints)...I showed another finished flower there too...

First, free cut a circle with your paper snips (I had approx. 2x2 dp scraps left over from my card front, so I used those...the teal flower is obviously made from a smaller square)....you DO NOT have to cut a perfect circle...the more 'off' the better, in my opinion! If you are uncomfortable with a wonky circle, feel free to punch a large circle out)...see the imperfection in my circle? Yep- it's wonky!

Now just start cutting in a spiral, turning the paper as you cut.

Okay, now stick the tiny end in your quilling tool, with the handle facing in (you can use a pair of fine tipped tweezers if you don't have one of these but I highly recommend buying one- this was about $4)

And start rolling the paper around the end of the tool, wrapping the paper tightly around itself. You want tight- you can loosen the flower up after.

Here's the end of the rolling process. Now you would just pull the tool (or tweezers) out the back of the flower and glue the flower to the end nub (end of your spiral cut).

Here are two flowers, the striped one 'looser' than the letter dp flower. If you want a looser, or larger flower, just use your fingers to slightly pull the curl out! And with these homemade flowers, it's okay that they aren't perfect!!! They are, after all, supposed to look like you made them!!

Yeah, it's not Monday anymore. In fact, the week is just about done. Blame it on the busy season, I guess. I had every intention of creating this post on Monday but while I wasn't looking the week passed me by and now it is Thursday. Well, here it is for your enjoyment now! :)

For this month's Technique Challenge we are going to work with our Product of the Month - Ranger Accents. We are adding paper pieced elements to our layouts and then using the Accents to highlight them further!

Paper piecing is so much fun to do. There are all kinds of designs on the internet but you can also use colouring pages like I did here. I included the image if you want to try this swallow, it is easy to do, it only has 11 pieces. And covering it with Glossy Accent made it so fancy!!

Of course I had to use Crackled Accent on the clock... I know not all old clocks are broken but it looks so great with that medium, I just can't help myself! lol

The keys were fun to do as well; These plastic shapes are designed to be lacquered. They look like they are made of copper because of their colour but really, they are plastic and well designed!! They have a little ring on the leys for example, that you use to hold your piece while you add the Accents on them and once it's dry, you cut off that little ring with scizors. I did a white one last week on my sketch double layout and on this layout, there is a black one made with Enamel Accent and also a clear one made with Glossy Accent.

For this challenge, I decided to do a different take on the paper piecing thing. I actually used QuicKutz dies and then covered them with these mediums. The heart is covered with Crackle Accents and the apples as well as the words "apple" and "eyes" are covered in Glossy Accents. These mediums work wonderfully with die cuts to help them pop off the page.

Using Your Not So Great Photos Tutorial

Getting the most out of your photographs….even the not so good ones!

If you are like me, you often look at a photograph and make a decision on whether or not you could build a layout around it. And, if you are still like me, you will often discount some of those photos because they are not great. We’ve all had them…photos where you might say…oh if only it was just this part, or closer, or clearer…. Well, I’m here to say don’t rush to discard some of those photos and to remind you of things that you can do with some of those not so great pics!

What about a photo that’s not quite in focus…a little blurry? Not to worry!

Originally I had hoped that the focus of this photo would be the little girl in the background, but she is a little too blurry for that. So, instead, I’ve made the focus my DD in the foreground and made the whole layout soft and romantic. You still get the feel of the fun the two of them are having without having a completely clear photo.

And we all have these ones…the too busy backgrounds or other distractions including headless “extras” in the photo. Well, if there are a few of these at the same event, I’d recommend cropping them quite small and matting them and then layering them so that they are grouped in your layout. You can tell they are part of the same timeframe and provide a “bigger picture” of the event while zooming in on the main subject of a photo. A great example is this layout of Heather’s. It is soooo cute! Even though she admitted to using the same photo over and over again but cropped differently, the same type of thing could be done with your “bad” photos!

Another way to add interest to a photo is through cropping pics. I think we all tend to crop to slightly smaller rectangles or squares, but think about cropping and matting just a “slice” of a photo. This works well when you want to zoom in a small section of the photo and works really well with architectural or landscape pics.

In this layout, the small photo is in a round frame. While I’m not sure if the original photo was a “not so great” one, this would still be a great way to crop and use one.

I love how Mim has cropped these pics to fit into a circle. Not only does it add interest, but is a great way to crop what might be run of the mill photos and make them unique!

This is one of my favourite examples of a photo that is great, but far away. The scenery in this pic is wonderful, but the person in the pic could easily get lost. Love the way Tammy has used a frame (that she has also journalled on) to highlight the person!

Another idea is that if you have a photo with the main subject off to one side, and maybe not too close up, you can slice the photo into sections and spread it across a larger space. This will lead your eye to the part of the pic you want to focus on and add interest to your page. This works well with photos that have something of interest or colour in the section of the photo that you want to cut. (Unfortunately, I don’t have an example of this one handy.)

I just wanted to share this tutorial with you that I found over at the Scrapbook & Cards Today blog.

Accordian fold Mini Album

I had intended to do a basic tutorial on making an accordion fold mini album, but I thought I'd incorporate the idea of doing a monthly "Currently" into the project as well. I've made this album twelve pockets large, perfect for on "Currently" sheet and photo each month. At the end of 2012, I'll have a snapshot of me throughout the year.

First off, you'll want to score a 12x12 piece of cardstock into thirds (at 4 inches and 8 inches), then you'll cut that 12x12 in half, so you have two 6 inch pieces. Fold them accordion style and glue together by overlapping two of the flaps. A 12-pocket album will use six–6 inch strips glued together.

Once your accordion is glued together, cut twelve 3 " x 4" rectangles and punch a half hole on one of the 4 inch sides. Then glue a rectangle to the right side of each two page spread. To get all twelve, you'll also be using the back of the accordion to house your pockets and photos.

I then printed off the questions and cut them into 3" x 4" rectangles. I also cut up a sheet of calender bingo cards from the Year•o•logy collection from Simple Stories (all patterned papers and stickers are from this line). I slipped the questions and the calendar in the pocket. When I answer my questions, I'll circle the date on the calendar, clever, no?

The final step is adding the cover. I cut a 6" x 12" piece of paper, scored it at 4.5" and 8.5" then glued the back page of the album to that scored part. Then I scored at 3.5" and 9.5" so the cover would fold up and around the accordion.

Decorate as desired, you can add a ribbon to hold it all together if you'd like. And there you have it, an accordion mini album, waiting to be filled.

Sour Cream Containers

These cuties have become one of my favorite new things to make. I know they've been around for a while and I did not create anything new! I love the simplicity of them!

Step 1: Grab your papers, tacky tape (or some other sticky tape), twine, crimper and embellies.

Step 2: Cut your paper to 4 1/4" x 5 1/2".

Step 3: Put tacky tape (or some other sticky tape) on 3 sides - 1 short and 2 long. Make sure to put the tape on the backside - or the patterned side that will be in the inside of your container. Peel off the tape cover.

Step 4: Roll 2 short sides together, overlap to form roll (like toilet paper roll).

Step 5: Pinch one of the ends together (I usually have the seam in the middle).

Step 6: Add your treats.

Step 7: Once you've filled it with treats, pinch it closed by pinching the second end in the opposite direction of the first seam.

Step 8: Crimp edges with a crimper. You can skip this step if you do not have a crimper. They still look cute ;).

Step 9: Embellish.

Everything you always wanted to know about ink but were afraid to ask.

Seriously, I really don’t know everything about inks. This is a complex and vast area because inks come in a wide array of combinations. You have to be a chemist to fully understand the ink world adequately. By all means, I’m no expert. That said; in my quest towards exploring and manipulating colours, I have developed a true passion for inking and I am excited to share what I have learned along the way. In doing so, I decided to stay away from brand names. I personally don’t have preferences, I love them all. I find that all inks and colours are fun to work with, and the choice really depends on what you are doing with it. I rummage through the kids’ supplies as much as in my expensive inks. It’s all in what your project requires; what you want and like in the result.

So let’s talk ink!! There are so many inks on the market, enough to make you dizzy. This is no wonder! Ink comes in the form of powder, pad, and pen, solid where you moisten to use, liquid in different kinds of bottles or even in a spray bottle, less liquid in a squeeze type container like gels, pastes, etc... To make things more confusing; on one hand, similar inks are referred to using different terms and on the other hand, same ink types often come in many of the above forms! It’s crazy! We hear about china ink, pigment ink, alcohol ink, chalk ink, oil-based ink, fast-drying ink, embossing ink, resist ink, hybrid ink, watermark ink, distress ink, permanent ink, archival ink, washable ink, dye ink, natural ink, gel ink, acrylic ink (yes, not only paints although paints have ink in them too!)... And we aren’t talking about inks formulated for newspapers, computer printers, flexography inks for packaging, advertisements, etc... I am skipping a few... The fact is that ink goes into everything. (And also that scrapbookers and crafters are passionate about inks!! So many inks are designed especially for crafting and scrapbooking.)

What is ink? Fundamentally, inks are made up of a base (a carrier if you will) that can be a number of things from water to solvent, and then there is ground pigments or minerals or dye (or a happy combination of these) added for colour. Lubricants, fixatives, resins, surfactants, fluorescents can also be used in ink composition, and pigments are composed of a surprising number of different particulate matter. The main goal of each ink type is to stick to the substrate it is intended for. Beyond this, there can be other benefits such as fade-resistance for example. That is why it is important to read the label!

There you have it... Now, let’s try to make some sense of it all. Basically, there are two main groups of ink types used in scrapbooking/crafting: The water-based inks and the solvent-based inks. Some inks are found in both groups, such as pigment inks for example. There’s pigment in it but the base differs. Since we cannot clearly separate these two main groups, the easiest way to go about this is to talk about the most common inks by type/term name.

However, before we do that, it helps to know that water-based inks generally dry faster versus a solvent-based ink, with the exception of alcohol (a type of solvent) inks which dry very fast. Water-based inks are also easier to clean and they are fantastic on paper and cardboard!! Although unless specially formulated for permanency, water-based inks often don’t resist fading over time. Whereas solvent-based inks are mostly slow-drying (again, with the exception of alcohol inks) and therefore they are perfect for heat embossing. Moreover, many solvent-based inks, especially alcohol inks, are perfect for applying to non-porous surfaces such as glass, metal or plastic. Water-based inks may never dry completely on non-porous surfaces or if they do, they will chip, wash off or just not stick.

Terms referring to inks used in crafting-scrapbooking:

Acrylic ink, is an extremely fluid acrylic that is pigmented with super-fine pigments. It is permanent, it dries fast and it is also water resistant once dry. It can be diluted with water to create effects similar to water-colouring.

Alcohol ink, a solvent-based dye ink designed for its archival quality and often also designed to adhere to non-porous surfaces such as glass, metal, plastic, foil, leather, etc. It dries very fast as the alcohol evaporates. This is also a great ink in its pen form because it blends colours easily. The pens are great for colouring stamped images for example. However, keep in mind that you may not stamp your image with an alcohol-based ink because the alcohol-based ink pens will blend and smear the ink of your outline. You need to use a water-based dye ink to stamp your image before you colour it with alcohol-based ink pens. On a side note, Alcohol ink pens are often used by animators when drawing animated movie pictures!

Archival ink, do not confuse this term with the brand... In actuality, when you refer to «archival quality», you refer to an ink that is designed for its long lasting, non colour fading properties. And not all archival type inks are alcohol-based; some are water-based dye inks that are specially formulated to achieve the same fade resistance and non bleeding qualities.

Chalk ink, a thick ink made of a variety of dye-based ink. This type of ink dries to a chalky finish and retains its colour even on dark surfaces. The chalk type inks come in the form of pads. There are big pads or little sponge-like-oval or square-shaped pads.

China ink, one of the most ancient ink on our planet; it’s actually made of soot and water combined, sometimes combined with oil. In India, it often comes in the form of a stick that you dampen to draw with it. So what we sometimes call «Indian ink» is the same as China ink. And we all know its black liquid traditional Chinese form in a bottle. The liquid type is typically oil-based.

Distress ink, again here, do not confuse this term with the brand... «Distress» refers to alteration techniques with the goal of giving an aged look to your projects. Not only inks accomplish this result. Paper shredding, tearing, etc, also give you this distressed effect. Typically, distress inks are a water-based dye ink that is especially formulated to dry slowly. It is thicker and its slow-drying yet dye-based properties allow you to blend it, alter it, and create that vintage, stained finish. It is a popular ink because of its versatility. For example, you can apply a small quantity on a sheet of plastic or glass or Teflon and spray water over it, and then you can brush it. Like acrylic ink, you can create effects similar to water-colouring. It is also fade-resistant.

Dye ink, a quick drying water-based ink that is more «transparent» in nature. Dye-based inks may fade with time, and sometimes bleed when used on very absorbent papers. However, this type of ink offers the most variety of colours.

Embossing ink, it is important to first clarify that there are two types of embossing techniques. One consists of using a template such as a plastic embossing folder or a metal die-cut that will raise paper (or other mediums such as foil for example) in the pattern of the template, this is «cold» embossing. The other technique consists of using embossing powders which melt when heated and create a raised (embossed) ink finish (heat embossing). And because this second technique requires ink (that the embossing powder will stick to), that is the embossing technique that I refer to throughout this text. So, «embossing ink» is the term used when referring to many types of ink that are formulated for the purpose of using in conjunction with embossing powders, it’s slow drying. In other words, embossing inks are not a type of ink; it’s rather a property of the ink composition/formulation for use in embossing.

Fast-Drying Ink, refers to the property of the ink. This term is common in referring to pigment inks, both water-based and solvent-based inks, which are specially formulated to dry fast. So yes, fast-drying ink is not a type of ink, it’s all about the ink’s formulation. Also see «pigment ink».

Hybrid ink, usually refers to a combination of dye and pigment ink (not containing solvents)

Natural ink, refers to a dye-based ink made with dye extracted from components found in nature such as in leaves, flowers and berries. China ink and Indian ink, pastels, all fall in this category for instance.

Permanent ink, refers to ink having an archival quality. Again here, this term refers to the properties in its composition; it is not a type of ink. Both water and solvent based inks can be formulated to be permanent. This «permanent» term also commonly refers to an ink which dries permanently on the surface it is intended for, without a heat setting.

Pigment ink, is often oil-based but can also be water-based. It is a thicker ink and it dries slowly. Therefore it is the best for embossing (as are the clear glues and watermarks). Pigment ink is also known for resisting fading even in direct sunlight. Multi-coloured ink pads are made with this type of ink because of its thick formulation; the colours don’t bleed into each other. Pigment ink is usually permanent but can sometimes take weeks to dry and it may not dry at all on non-porous surfaces such as plastic or metal! Pigment inks formulated for fast-drying are commonly found in a pad form. There are big pads or little sponge-like-oval-shaped pads, just like the chalk inks.

Resist ink, is made of a special dye or non-dye composition formulated to prevent additional dye ink colors from bonding to the paper. And it «resists» other dye-based inks so they don’t adhere when stamped on glossy or coated papers as well. Traditionally, resist inks are clear in colour although it is now available coloured as well. However, other mediums such as sealants can be used in resist-techniques... Not only resist inks.

Washable ink, is a water-based ink usually designed for children. It is non-toxic and obviously designed to be washable although it may still stain certain fabrics. Moms probably already know that...

Watermark ink, is a specially formulated clear composition which leaves a subtle tone on tone effect on the surface you apply it to. It is a slow-drying ink and you can emboss with it. But it is primarily designed to leave that "watermark" effect on your projects.

In Conclusion:

Is your head spinning yet? If you are attracted by inks; the best way to get acquainted with them is to experiment to your little heart’s content, one ink type at a time.

If you are new at this and don’t know where to begin, if you prefer to stick to the basics; I suggest you take a class on a new technique, and/or follow tutorials and participate in challenges that will make you get out of your comfort zone! They are often the kick in the tibia we need to get going and we are always proud of the result. Don’t take my word for it, try for yourself!! =)

In my mind, as you begin exploring the ink world, starting to feel the need to alter-colour embellishments (think of the chipboards, cut outs, etc) even make your own embellishments, or simply add depth and a finishing touch to your work: three types of ink are essential:

I would recommend that you start with chalk inks, and/or fast-drying pigment inks, that come in the tiny pad form , to ink the edges of your projects. This gives a more finished, professional look to your layouts. But read the label, if you purchase a pigment ink that doesn’t dry fast, you might smudge all over your project! Everyone agrees to say that brown is the colour you will use the most, so start with that one. You will discover that this type of ink is also great for other colouring projects, you can use them on chipboards, with masks, re-colour letters, etc. They are a must!

Image 2. The blue and orange paper circles are inked with a brown halk ink and so is the chipboard, entirely covered with 3 colours of chalk ink.

From there, you could extend to the spray inks (dye ink in a spray form), found in both water-based and alcohol-based formulas. Some are pigmented with metallic particles. Fun effects can be created by spraying ink droplets on your layouts’ backgrounds. You can also use them with masks. The alcohol-based sprays are great to alter the colour of pretty much anything in order to match the colour palette of your layouts. The water-based sprays do that too but you cannot use them on non-porous surfaces such as plastic (many ornaments are made of plastic). The colour you choose to start would be the colour that you use the most on your projects. You know, if you have girls pictures, go for the pink or red, if you like the vintage look, go with a cherry chocolate colour, if you are working on a wedding album, go for the metallic gold and so on.

Image 3. The background was a white cardstock before it was sprayed with 3 colours; the 3rd one contains metal pigments giving this shiny finish that matches the coloured stamped image.

And a third step would be the slow-drying pigment inks to begin embossing! These pigment-inks require a small investment because you will also need embossing powder and a heat gun. And they are a tad strenuous because you have to heat the embossing powder over the ink, in order to set. It’s not hard at all; it just requires the additional step... so if you’re the «lazy» crafter-scrapbooker type, you may not like it... However, it adds professionalism to your greeting cards and all your craft projects. Pigment inks combined with embossing powders can be used on everything from the edges of your photos, papers, props, chipboards. They can also be used with rubber and gel stamps!! Can you imagine the results? If you want to impress people... Emboss!

Image 1. Inked using gel stamps and embossed with a silver powder (Not to brag, everyone can do it, I have to say that embossing is difficult to capture on a photo, the real-life result is quite stunning)

Image 2. The gears are embossed with the same silver powder as Image 1 and then embossed again with an extra thick clear embossing powder to give it that rough look. The background is cold-embossed but it is also heat-embossed with pink, purple and gold embossing powders.

Image 3. The gears are inked blue with pigment ink and then embossed with an extra thick clear embossing powder (it’s white when you spread it and it turns clear upon heating) giving this lacquered rough finish. If you want a smoother finish, use a super fine embossing powder...

So I so hope that you enjoyed this article-reference guide and I do hope you all enjoy working with your inks because colours and textures are what make a project unique and that's what our world is made of!!!! It's the most exiting form of expression!!!! INK YOUR STUFF!!!! LOL

Well, you all know how fond I am of my precious Glossy Accent.... I'm so fond of it and I know how much it resists to heat, I use it for glue all the time!!! On top of incorporating it to all kinds of projects, as you have seen on my previous layouts; I love the stuff for its beautiful glass like effect. Oh JOY this month!!!!!!!!! I had so much fun making this layout and my TPC Studio - Memory Lane paper collection is perfect for the Glossy!!!!!

I'm in Heaven!! Now, this is for the patient scrapbooker because you need to apply the Glossy or the Crackled or the Enamel Accents and then LET DRY overnight. But the reward for your patience is a luxurious shiny texture on your papers, you can make your own fancy ornaments or use it directly on your background, it's really fun! If you apply it thick like I do (not so much with the Enamel that is more liquid, but with the Glossy and the Crackled Accents), you can minimize the wavyness of the paper when it dries by glueing cardstock leftovers behind your paper before applying the Accents. In other words: Double your base before applying the Accents in a thick coat. That's what I did here and see, it's not too wavy at all.

And you can do fine detail with it of course, do the little needle trick I showed you with using Stickles, the Glossy/Crackled/Enamel Accents are the same as Stickles in their application.

I wanted to do a monochromatic layout with this line as my papers are quite pale. I started with white cardstock and spritzed it with blue homemade glimmer mist. Then I layered the papers, frame and snowflakes. I used the Glossy Accents Enamel on some of the snowflakes and also on the chipboard snowman. I also stamped some flourishes and used the enamel to outline those as well. I placed some blue cardstock circles under the letter stickers to make them standout a bit more.

Crackle Accents - I took a chance and put some on this pie die cut and was very happy with the results. It is hard to see in the picture but it really gave it a realistic pie crust look.

Glossy Accents - These are a long-time fave of mine. I added some to the corrugated heart and the "Sweet" letters to give them a little extra pop.

Flower Tutorial

Supplies: BasicGrey Small Rook Sampler, Picadilly and Out of Print papers, Stitched & Glazed Brads

Other: Uni-ball & Pentel Pens, Fiskars scallop scissors, Fiskars Scallop circle & heart punch.

Here's a close up of the flowers to let you really see how cute and in a minute how EASY they are to make!

1. Punch one circle base to hold the flower (size depends on the size you're making the flower. Here it was 1.5" and the scallop circles were 2") and eight scalloped circles.

2. Fold the scalloped circles into quarters.

3. Adhere four folded quarter circles around the base circle with scallops at the edge as shown.

4. Add more adhesive to this layer and add the remaining four folded circles on top of the first layer, off-set slightly for variety.

5. Punch hole in center of flower once layers are all added.

6. Add brad to center to secure the petals.

7. Gently separate the petal layers to add dimension to your flower and there you have it! Just right for embellishing your project!

Make your own transparencies with Stickles

Who doesn't like Stickles?? We all see Stickles applied to just about anything. But you can make your own ornaments with Stickles too!!

This is a very easy way to create your own fun transparent ornaments.

I have to give credit where it's due and so I must tell you that I learned this technique from Joanie Guillemet a few years ago.

You will need:

- Clear plastic (I use packaging for this (what's underneath on the picture below), the plastic from packaging is nice and sturdy and I help the planet by re-using it.)

- Alcohol ink pad (think Archival... only archival alcohol ink will stick and dry permanently on plastic... Water based dye ink won't dry, it will smudge)

- Stamps (anyone you like but don't choose intricate designs for this, simple ones are best)

- Stickles (any Stickles works well)

- Scissors to cut the plastic pieces

Now cut pieces of plastic to fit your stamp(s) and stamp your image(s) onto them:

Be careful not to press too hard because your stamps might slide over the plastic. If your plastic is too slippery, one little trick that helps is to sand very slightly over the plastic first. Your stamp will not slide as much after this. But you know, after you stamped over plastic a few times, you get good at it and you won't need to sand at all.

You see that it did slip a little bit on the darker circle-wheel stamp, that's why I made more than one. But with using a simple stamp design, you will see that it doesn't matter, the piece will still turn out pretty good. So don't overly worry about that.

Now you are ready to fill in areas with Stickles.

With circles, I find it easier to start on the outer edge and work my way in:

I don't go all the way in, I stop at about this point...

And I finish spreading the Stickles with a needle and I also make sure that I did not leave any space uncovered on the edges:

I just put one or more drops of Stickles in the middle for more delicate designs and I spread to the edges with a needle... The needle is so much more precise than the nozzle of the Stickles bottle!!

Let dry overnight and the next morning, turn your pieces to reveal the lines of your stamp and this is what you get!! Ready to use on layouts or cards or any fun project. The beauty of tranparencies is that they can be placed anywhere, even right over photos!!

1. Patterned paper is generally expected to be laid down on our layouts. I cut some circles out of mine and made a handmade flower.

2. The red "Christmas" chipboard letters were fabulous as they were but I wanted to add a little extra pop so I covered them in some fine glitter.

3. The "Family" cardstock sticker is generally intended to lay flat on the page but I decided to double matte it and pop it up.

4. The Baker's twine is generally used for knots in buttons or perhaps strung across the page like ribbon but I decided to change things up and make a flower with it.

I hope this helps you see that techniques don't have to be complicated or stressful. Take a technique and stick to the basics with it and you are sure to create some fabulous layouts!

I came across this incredible mini album and it is so fabulous that I just had to share it here. Julia created this for the Moxie Fab World column in the September/October issue of Paper Crafts Magazine.

Family of Hearts

I think the thing that I really loved about creating this album is that it’s of my family but also, it’s a quirky little album using playing cards and it is so small and cute. This album uses the Echo Park Paper Co. For the Record line and it makes it really easy for everything to coordinate.

Each card was chosen for a reason. The front cover card is a 7 for the number of people in our family.

Of course, my sweet hubby just had to be the king…

…and I’m his queen.

My oldest child, James, is the Jack.

My daughter comes next and as second child, she is on the 2 of hearts.

Next in line is of course, on the 3 of hearts.

And then comes number four.

I thought about using a 5 of heart for my last child but he’s such a little bundle of personality, I just had to make him the joker.

After creating my little album and covering the pages with papers, photos and embellishments, I punched holes with my Crop-a-dile and then bound it together with some clips from the office store.

Badge Holder Birthdays

One of my crafty goals is to send a birthday card to everyone in my family (I have to justify buying all of those stamps somehow!!). Well, if you have been following my blog at all then you know I have A LOT of family!! Sometimes, there is just too much stuff in my brain and I can't always remember the dates. So, I decided to make myself a memory aid.

I have to admit that these ideas are not my own. I have seen similar things around the web and I just crammed them together into one project.

Let's get to it.....

Here is a list of what you will need....

1. A package of badge holders (I picked mine up from Staples)

2. cardstock in the base colours of your choice (White is probably best for your birthday list but an alternate soft neutral colour would work)

3. Patterned Paper of your choice (I used one of my 6x6 Lime Twist pads from My Mind's Eye)

4. You will also need whatever additional embellishments you wish to add

Step 1: First thing you want to do is open up your badge holders and remove the string. Feel free to toss it since you won't need it.

(Once upon a time, I would have added it to my scrappy stash because 'someday' I just may put it to use but I am trying to control the natural packrat in me.)

Step 2: Cut your cardstock. The white pieces will be used for your monthly lists. (Mine are cut to 2.5x3) The red pieces are the background. (Mine are cut to 3.25x4 but this could change depending on the size of your badge holders.)

Step 3: I used a Papertrey Ink stamp to stamp the lines on each white piece. You could use a similar style of stamp; ruler and do them yourself or you could print from your computer.

Step 4: Use a marker and add each month to the top of your lists. Once all 12 are completed, add in the birthdays you wish to remember.

Step 5: Assemble and embellish each month's list as you wish. I did not take pictures of this part as this is entirely up to the individual.

Note: I adhered a month's list to both sides of the red cardstock to avoid things being too bulky in the badge holders.

Step 6: Once all pages are complete, slide them into the badge holders. I tied mine together with twine from The Twinery (also available at Scrapping Turtle).

I don't have a ton of Christmas pics (shockingly b/c I have a million "other" kind of pics) - anyway I plan to change that this year but for this layout I decided to twist it a bit and do a December Daily type layout. I don't have the stamina to stick with an entire album devoted to the month of December but it is a special month with so many fun things going on so I decided this would be the perfect way to jot down some of our holiday memories.

I did a square for every day in December up to Christmas - I made sure that the weekend days were full circles for journalling as that's when we'll do the bulk of our Holiday activities - I'm actually not sure on a normal "work day" what I'll write but maybe a little note about listening to Xmas music etc - I'm sure I'll find something.

Here is my take on this fun sketch!! I reversed it and played with contrasts from my Echo Park paper collection and I also tried to keep it simple. The papers are so beautiful and delicate, I didn't want to overcroud them. I cut 3 small circles to glue under my clear dew drops to bring back the pattern, I'm in love with that green paper!!!

I used Glossy Accents on the light bulbs across the top, cut small strips of the striped paper to make my own xmas tree. I put a piece of cardboard in the bottom of the bottle cap, topped with a small metal tree charm, added some gems and then poured in some Glossy Accents.

I found this fabulous tutorial over on the Simple Stories blog and wanted to share it here with all of you.

An Envelope Tutorial

Today I'm going to show you how to make your own envelopes for cards or hidden journaling on your layouts. Sure you can buy fancy envelopes, but do they match the Simple Stories lines? I don't think so. But now you'll know how to make your own, our sample is 3.5" x 6". You can make them smaller or a bit bigger using one 12" x 12" sheet. I'm using the new Year•o•graphy line for this tutorial.

1. Cut an 8" x 9" rectangle and mark out the following measurements:

2. Cut out the corners:

3. Trim just a bit off the edges, note how the greyed rectangle in the above image is just a bit larger on the edge? Trim the one edge a bit more, as shown below, this will make the folding much easier.

4. Score and fold.

5. Fold the two sides in, draw a slight curve on the top side of the envelope and cut it out.

6. Do the same for the top and bottom flaps. You can use a corner rounder for this step as well.

7. Glue the center and bottom flap.

8. Let dry.

9. Punch 2 circles, I used a 3/4" punch. Add a brad to the center of each circle, apply a pop dot to the back of each circle.

10. Attach the circles to the flap and the back of the envelope. Wrap with a bit of twine to hold it closed.

11. Decorate as desired, and you are finished. Now you have a custom made envelope to match the line you are working with. Pretty cool, huh?

Here is my frame. I so enjoyed working with this!! I love the transparency!!!! I took 3 pictures to show you how you can see right through!! This is why, while I'm still a beginner, I decided on quilling. It accentuates the transparency effect.

Rub-Ons stick really well to the plastic!! You can pierce the plastic, I mean, the sky is the limit as to what you can do with these frames!!! And they will match any decor by picking up the wall colour!!

I first saw these frames back in April at ScrapFest Kitchener and I so fell in love with the samples Fancy Pants provided for the Turtle booth that I picked up a few of them! I brought them home and they have been sitting here ever since. This month was the perfect excuse to bring them out.

The first one I did uses my kit for this month and shows you that you don't have to stick to the intended theme of collections. This Christmas collection worked perfectly for this project as long as I was choosy about which patterns I used!

Using Moulding Paste

I've been wanting to try this technique for a while so decided that there is no time like the present! You are going to be doing this tutorial right along with me as I experiment....I'm going to be using Moulding Paste in 4 different ways to show you how to add some texture to your projects. Moulding Paste is great because there are a number of different effects that you can get with it...and you can use so many of your current supplies with it as well. This is definitely a "messy" project, not for the faint of scrapbooking heart , but I hope you'll give it a try. I know that I will be trying more of these, so watch for more examples in my upcoming projects. (See also my October "extra" challenge layout. I used gesso on this one with a stencil. I found the gesso was a bit thinner texture than the moulding paste...I think I like the moulding paste better.

My favourite is the last one...but I have lots more stencils and stamps and ideas, so I think I will enjoy playing and experimenting with this medium some more.

Don't forget to thoroughly clean your stamps and stencils before the gesso or moulding paste dries on them.

I'm going to show the 4 techniques in order of steps.

Technique 1: Smear some paste across your paper. Spread it in different directions so that you will get different areas of texture. I used an old credit card to do this.

Technique 2: Lay a stencil on your paper and smear some paste across the design. Carefully lift the stencil, leaving the raised design intact. If you only want to use part of a stencil you can cover the other sections with paper.

Technique 3: Smear some paste on your paper. Press a rubber or acrylic stamp into the wet paste to imprint the design. (You can also use other things to create texture...think burlap or wire mesh.)

Technique 4: Smear some paste directly onto your rubber or acrylic stamp and press onto the paper to "stamp" your design. (not shown)

Let these dry overnight on their own, or gently dry it with your heat gun.

Technique 1-4: Rub inks across your paper and paste areas to achieve the effect and colours you want. OR Spray your paper and stencilled image with Glimmer Mist Take a slighly damp cloth and rub over the paste areas to remove part of the ink. Ink and mist until you are satisfied with the result.

Add embellishments of your choice to finish the project. I used rub-ons (found it a bit difficult on the paste areas, but it could have been the rub-on brand rather than the technique)

I also stamped the same image on the card where I stamped into the paste.

Our kits this month were just brimming with goodies, so I had lots left over to make an extra layout using a photo of my DD and her friends at the zoo.

I used the gesso and the stencil to create this design on the paper. I then rubbed it with inks and stickles. It is a very similar design to one of the transparencies I used.
